Los rastreadores (The Trackers) is a two-channel video based on The Searchers (1956). Directed by John Ford, it is one of the most emblematic westerns in film history. Not trying to reenact the original film, but adapting its main themes, the similarities can be found in the use of the local landscape and its representations of social tensions. The character of Ernesto is based on Roberto Suárez Gómez, the most powerful drug trafficker in Bolivian history, nicknamed “the King of Cocaine”. In Los rastreadores, racial, social and alienation issues are distilled into a minimalist narration that condenses the massacre of Ernesto’s family, the kidnapping and the search for his daughter. Silences and voice-overs are used to amplify its narrative, which operates as a displacement of political discourse in Bolivia.
