A couple of years ago, Christian moved to Cocachimba: a poor village in the high jungle of Peru. Coming from the capital, the stigma of being a city guy hinders his integration with the local peasants. Nevertheless, he’s taken it upon himself to become one of them – it’s what he calls his “game”. Through anecdotes of hallucinations and thoughts, this newcomer sheds light on the gaps between two contrasting cultures and mentalities that coexist in one country.
We think of a city as the center or the core of a larger area. We assume that cities contain
representative samples of many other places and can somehow tell us everything we want to know about a region. We tend to forget that this is not necessarily true. A city doesn’t necessarily echo the voices of its region. In fact, it most often differs from them.
The film reflects on the contrast between the urban and the rural mindsets. Christian, who was born and raised in Lima – a capital and a metropolis that accumulates a third of Peru’s entire population, moves to a 300-inhabitant village. He’s well aware of the differences and tries to take an unconventional approach to unlearn what the city life has engraved in his persona. Nehemías, the name that gives title to this work, is a person Christian refers to in numerous occasions. Nehemías embodies being a local with the most confidence, and therefore becomes a figure for Christian to look up to.

Hace un par de años, Christian se mudó a Cocachimba, un pueblo pobre en la selva alta de Perú. Viniendo de la capital, el estigma de ser un hombre de la ciudad dificulta su integración con los campesinos locales. No obstante, no cesa en su intento de convertirse en uno de ellos. Es lo que él llama su “juego”. A través de anécdotas sobre alucinaciones y pensamientos, este recién llegado arroja luz sobre las brechas entre dos culturas y mentalidades que coexisten en un mismo país.
Pensamos en una ciudad como el centro o el núcleo de un área más grande. Suponemos que las ciudades contienen muestras representativas de muchos otros lugares y de alguna manera pueden decirnos todo lo que queremos saber sobre una región sin que salgamos de sus límites. Pero lo cierto es que una ciudad no necesariamente se hace eco de las voces de su región. De hecho, con mayor frecuencia difiere de ellos.
La película reflexiona sobre el contraste entre la mentalidad urbana y la rural. Christian, nacido y criado en Lima, una capital y una metrópoli que acumula un tercio de toda la población del Perú, se muda a una aldea de 300 habitantes. Consciente de las diferencias, trata de adoptar un enfoque poco convencional para desaprender lo que la vida de la ciudad ha grabado en su personalidad. Nehemías, el nombre que da título a esta obra, es una persona a la que Christian se refiere en numerosas ocasiones. Nehemías es el lugareño con más seguridad y, por lo tanto, quien se convierte en figura a la que admirar.
